Appleton Partners LLP – was established by Marc Appleton in 1976, and has offices in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, California. We have designed over 700 projects and specialize in the planning, design, and landscaping of custom residential, institutional and commercial projects for both private and public clients. Our projects include additions, restorations and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings as well as new construction. We have been extensively published in major design periodicals and have won numerous awards and competitions.

Design is a collaborative process with our clients, inspired by their specific desires, needs, program, and budget. The location, environment, and siting of each project strongly influence this process, and a harmonious relationship between the buildings and landscape is always an essential concern.

Whether contemporary or traditional in style, our architecture strives for an appreciation of place and time. The work is diverse and eclectic, and we reject the idea that a successful design practice needs to be “branded” or have a consistent signature style, or that architecture always has to shout. Our practice is instead an enterprise of quiet but attentive craft.

Marc Appleton

Founding Principal, AIA

Marc Appleton is the founding Principal of Appleton Partners LLP – Architects, with offices in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, California. He received a B.A. honors degree in English from Harvard College (1968), And a Master of Architecture degree from The Yale School of Architecture (1972). Prior to opening his practice in 1976 he worked for several architectural firms, including Benjamin Thompson & Associates, MacAllister, Rinehart & Ring, and Frank O. Gehry & Associates.

His design work has received many awards from the American Institute of Architects and other organizations, and has been widely published in Architectural Digest, Town and Country, Sunset and other periodicals. He was consistently named to Architectural Digest’s top 100 designers from 1991-2016. In 2011, he won the Westweek Star of Design Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2012 he was awarded the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s Ross Awards Board of Directors Honor, and in 2014 he became the first recipient of the Design Leadership Network’s inaugural Design Leadership Award.

In addition to architecture, his practice also involves landscape design and planning, and has included the master planning for downtown Pacific Palisades, the renovation and landscape planning for the San Ysidro Ranch Resort as well as numerous private gardens and ranches.

Among the books he has written, published or contributed to are Rexford Newcomb’s Mediterranean Domestic Architecture in the United States (Acanthus,1999), George Washington Smith: An Architect’s wScrapbook (Tailwater, 2001), California Mediterranean (Rizzoli, 2007), New Classicists (Images, 2008), Casa del Herrero (Rizzoli, 2009), Robert Winter’s Myron Hunt at Occidental College (Tailwater, 2012), Master Architects of Southern California 1920-1940: Gordon B. Kaufmann (Tailwater/Angel City Press, 2016), and Ranches: Home on the Range in California (Rizzoli, 2016.)

A native of California and Arizona, he is a founding member of the Appleton-Whittel Research Ranch Foundation in Arizona and the Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art in San Diego. He has served on the board of trustees for Prescott College in Arizona, The Cooper Union in New York, The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, and currently serves on a number of committees and boards including Lotusland, the Casa del Herrero Foundation, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum and the Deans’ Council of the Yale School of Architecture.

His travels have included Austria, the Bahamas, Belgium, Canada, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Guatemala, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Monaco, Morocco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Scotland, Sicily, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland.

Ken Mineau

Managing Partner, AIA

Kenneth Mineau is Managing Partner and Director of Operations for Appleton Partners LLP. Raised in the Midwest, he attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. After college he practiced in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Santa Barbara.

After designing several projects in Japan and China, he expatriated for several years to manage the Southeast Asia office of Berkus Group Architects, and he was Director for Kaplan Mclaughlin Diaz Architects in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Special projects included work on the Sackler Museum at the University of Beijing, China, Campus master plan for Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, as well as a variety of medical, community and resort planning projects throughout California, Florida, Japan and Malaysia. In 2000, Ken joined Appleton Partners LLP and started the Santa Barbara office with Marc Appleton after just completing the design and entitlement for the Miramar Hotel in Montecito and the Santa Barbara Bank & Trust Headquarters. At Appleton Partners, he oversees a variety of residential and commercial projects, most notably the restoration of the historic San Ysidro Ranch, St. Anthony’s Seminary and the recently re-approved Miramar Hotel.

Ken is also actively involved in community projects such as the proposed Islamic Center in Santa Barbara, the planning of the Eastern Goleta Valley Community Plan and the C4 Chapter of the US Green Building Council. He has presented a lecture on preservation for a Design Leadership Network event at Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California and a lecture on George Washington Smith to the Santa Barbara Newcomers Club.

Ken recently completed a Green Building & Sustainable Design Certification program offered by the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is married to Normah Halim and enjoys travel, riding motorcycles and his five grand-nephews.

Andrew Scott

Partner

Andrew Scott is a Partner and Director of the Santa Monica office. Raised in Pacific Palisades, he attended the University of Southern California School of Architecture, where he graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture.

After college, he practiced in Los Angeles designing large retail centers in Denver, Southern California and Australia. In 2001, he completed his Master’s Degree of Architecture at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Urban Design and Architecture.

While in college, Andrew lived and studied in Como, Italy as part of the School of Architecture’s study abroad program where his passion for travel was born and has lead him to the following countries: Austria, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cook Islands, Denmark, England, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, and Switzerland.

In 2000, Andrew joined Appleton Partners as a designer. Over the past 20 years, he has managed numerous successful residential and commercial projects in Santa Barbara, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Hermosa Beach, Santa Monica, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar and Martha’s Vineyard.

Andrew is married to Lauren, and they have a daughter Shelby. He is an active outdoorsman enjoying alpine climbing, mountain biking, skiing, camping, scuba diving, triathlons and travel.

Andrea Van den Eikhof

Associate Principal

A native of Los Angeles Andrea Van den Eikhof received her Master of Architecture from UCLA and joined Appleton team in 1997.

Andrea’s love of travel which has taken her throughout the world, sparked her appreciation of architecture at an early age, well preparing her for a career in traditional architecture. Her sensitivity to detail, proportion, and understanding of construction, as well as her ability to communicate and mitigate the client’s desires into reality, and strong relationships with both consultants and contractors have resulted in a variety of exceptional projects.

In addition to her work on projects, Andrea’s leadership qualities include mentoring staff, directing production standards and constantly looking for new ways to improve the collaboration and office culture at Appleton.

Leo Casas

Design Director, AIA, NCARB, ICAA

Leo’s passion for architecture started at an early age when he found himself on the job sites of his father’s construction projects. As the son of a builder and craftsman, the lessons learned through hands-on experience have served to form his approach to the craft of architecture in all its applications. Leo continued his pursuit of architectural training at the University of Notre Dame receiving both undergraduate and graduate degrees all while also participating in the School of Architecture’s renowned Rome Studies Program during three semesters of study abroad. Leo would go on to teach for that very same program in 2003 and 2004. After receiving his professional degrees, Leo practiced in prestigious firms in New York, Houston, and San Diego before becoming Town Architect of Seaside, FL and where he founded his eponymous firm, Braulio Casas Architects. Through his practice, Leo received many awards including a Palladio Award for a home in Seaside and Mizner Medals for homes in Seaside and Watercolor, Florida.

Since 2015, Leo Casas has served as Design Director for the firm’s two offices. In that capacity, Leo is responsible for all aspects of design during the life of a project from Schematic Design through Construction Administration collaborating closely with the design team and staff. Leo’s commitment to rigor and quality serve the Firm’s clientele well and is consistent with Appleton Partners’ mission to bring to life a rich regional approach to architecture all while implementing the principles of classical and traditional architecture.

Leo has worked closely with Marc Appleton, the firm’s founding Principal, on numerous buildings of many scales and a variety of building types. From large estates in wine country to resorts on the coast, their collaboration today continues the legacy established by Marc and carried on by the next generation of leaders at Appleton Partners, LLP. This collaborative creative process ensures that the prolific legacy will continue into the future.

Sharon Crawley

director of finance and administration

 

As the Director of Finance and Administration, Sharon Crawley is responsible for all of the company’s financial operations, including all administration, and leads all human resources activities. Her career spans more than 30 years of varied experience in financial management, business administration, and business leadership.

Before joining Appleton Partners in 2003, she has held senior level positions in both accounting and business administration. In 2011 she formed a CFO Financial Networking Group with peer firms in Southern California. This group meets often to discuss best practices in our industry.

Sharon has studies in Business Administration at Glendale Community College, participated in several PMSJ Management Bootcamps, Project Management College Courses, Consulting Alliances Business Mastery Programs, CAB Entrepreneurial Edge Programs and many other continuing Business Administration courses.

Some of her extracurricular activities include volunteering with Habitat for Humanity projects,Co-Coordinator/Tutor for Alexandria House Program, volunteered at Glendale Memorial Hospital’s Annual Wine & Roses Fundraisers, and participated in Glendale political campaign assisting the Treasurer. She has traveled to Italy, France, England, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, the Caribbean, Hawaii and most of the US. She lives in Santa Barbara with her husband Andrew and dog Casey. Andrew being a chef, they enjoy all things food, wine and travel!

Susan Queen

Associate

 

Susan is a native of Southern California and holds a Bachelor of Art History from the University of California Los Angeles and a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois, Chicago. She is licensed in the state of California. While working for a Chicago based firm she participated in a variety of project types including museums, custom residential, and historical restoration of state buildings and private clubs. Returning to Los Angeles she worked on larger scale institutional projects, learning the unique technical requirements for a high-profile performing arts center in southern California and a U.S.Embassy in Europe. She loves local and long-distance travel and in her trips to Europe and around the U.S. she is continually interested in the urban fabric and walkable cities. 

Susan joined Appleton Partners in 2005 and has since practiced on numerous residential projects of varying scale throughout southern California, taking them from schematic design through construction. She enjoys supporting staff with project development as well as collaborating with office leaders to improve upon Appleton Partner’s high standards of project delivery.

Paul Rubison

Associate

Paul attended the University of Kentucky where he received a Bachelor of Architecture.  Following college, Paul spent several years on the east coast working for commercial and residential firms in New Jersey and Washington D.C.  While in D.C., he began using Building Information Modeling (BIM) Software.  He later returned to Kentucky where he joined EOP Architects, a firm that developed a variety of projects ranging from mixed-use buildings and residential condos to academic facilities and fitness centers.  In 2009 the firm was recognized by AIA Kentucky with their Distinguished Firm Award.  Projects he worked on included a new 280,000 square foot research building for the College of Pharmacy at the University of Kentucky, as well as a stadium for the 2010 World Equestrian Games.  In 2007, Paul attended Autodesk University and received advanced training in Revit and BIM technology.  While at EOP, Paul held concurrent positions as both a Project Manager and the firm’s Senior BIM Manager.

Paul Rubison is an Associate in the Santa Barbara office of Appleton Partners LLP.  He joined Appleton Partners in 2011 and enjoys collaborating with staff from both the Santa Barbara and Santa Monica locations in the development of projects and management of the offices.  Paul has overseen numerous residential and commercial projects since joining Appleton Partners, some of which have been featured in national design publications including Veranda and Architectural Digest.

John P. Margolis

Senior Project Manager, AIA

John P. Margolis was born in Boston, Massachusetts into an academic family full of intellectual and artistic diversity. He received his bachelor’s degree with a Major in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, and later his Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986. Early on he pursued his lifelong passion for architecture on urban and library design projects around the country during his tenure at numerous prestigious firms including Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott.

John’s primary interest has always been residential architecture and particularly the design of the built form and the surrounding landscape as a seamless unity. This prompted his master’s thesis planning and design study: The Villa and the Garden – Suburbia Reexamined at the Carolands Mansion in Hillsborough, California.

In 2014, John relocated to Los Angeles to serve as Studio Director at Evens Architects, the traditional studio at the KAA Design Group after maintaining his own practice Margolis, Incorporated for over twenty years on the affluent Gold Coast north of Boston. There he designed many varied residential designs – predominantly in the traditional vernacular, typical of the grand estates built over a century earlier. His projects have been published in periodicals both domestically and in Europe. In 2019, John joined the Santa Barbara office of Appleton Partners LLP as a Senior Project Manager.

His passion for classical and traditional architecture led him to the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) in 1990 where he currently serves as the Vice President of the Southern California Chapter and was recently elected to Fellow of the ICAA. John has also served as New England Chapter President for five consecutive years. John is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is licensed in Massachusetts. John also serves on the Regional Cabinet and National Council for his alma mater Washington University in St. Louis.

Isaac Hendricks

A local to the Santa Barbara area, Isaac attended ITT Technical Institute, graduating with a degree in Design with an emphasis in Construction Technology. Having commenced his career in the Construction field as a teenager, he gained an appreciation for design aesthetic and quality construction methods. During the course of his career, Isaac has worked for many notable high-end residential Architecture firms in Santa Barbara and Montecito including: Berkus Design Studio, Shubin & Donaldson, and Studio William Hefner.

Isaac Hendricks is a Project Manager in the Santa Barbara office of Appleton Partners LLP. He believes in forward movement, positive collaboration, attention to detail, and that strong work ethic contributes to personal and professional success. Nearly two decades of experience in high-end residential Architectural design and construction allows him the ability to visualize and design buildings that are viable and effective. His passion lies in finding solutions to challenging design problems and seeing projects through from concept to completion. With each project, he strives to design homes that inspire, nurture, and transform the lives of the families who inhabit them. 

Anthony Carmola

Anthony attended Clemson University in South Carolina where he received both his Bachelor’s and Master of Architecture + Health degree. After undergrad, he practiced in Greenville SC working closely with contractors and builders on custom residential projects, before then returning to Clemson for his Master’s Degree. During graduate school, he studied a semester in Genoa, Italy and was able to travel most of Europe. After college, he moved to Charleston SC where he worked for a number of years on a wide range of disciplines from custom restaurants, high end residential, mixed use development, historic restoration, to municipal & city projects. 
 
Work rooted in regional building traditions and types while engaging modern construction materials and methods has been what has driven Anthony’s architecture career. In 2015, he moved to Los Angeles and joined Appleton Partners as a Project Manager to continue this desire. Here, he has worked on a number of custom residential as well as custom commercial projects for the firm around Southern California, Nevada and Arkansas. He has his architecture license in both California and South Carolina and loves to compete in tennis tournaments around the area.
