Rose Tarlow has always been a trailblazer. A charter member of the AD100 Hall of Fame, she planted the flag of her namesake furniture business, Rose Tarlow Melrose House, on Melrose Place in Los Angeles in 1976, decades before the commercial strip became a hotbed of luxury fashion retail. Today, the pioneering designer is making waves again, relocating Melrose House from its current perch on Melrose Avenue to a new, ground-up building on Robertson Boulevard, re-energizing the West Hollywood commercial strip as a major design destination.
Tarlow developed the design of her new flagship showroom with architect Marc Appleton, a frequent collaborator known for his mastery of classic and vernacular styles. “The new space evolved as a study of roof pitches on old barns. I wanted to create a different image than the original white Melrose House building,” she says, describing the structure that will anchor the corner of Robertson and Dorrington Avenues. The architectural details are classic Tarlow: elegant yet restrained. The complex will also include gracious al fresco garden spaces. Ground-breaking for the reimagined Melrose House took place in March 2018, with an expected completion date in Spring 2019.
In preparation for the opening, Tarlow is creating 30 to 40 new contemporary furniture designs that will be unveiled with the showroom building and add to the heady mix she has assembled since reacquiring the Melrose House business three years. Her signature presentation—mixing pedigreed antiques and humble yet sculptural vintage pieces with her own designs—will continue to define the showroom experience in its airy, light-filled new location. And for designers constantly battling L.A. traffic, the new space will have one more added attraction: underground parking.
